Growth Letter #6

This is not your typical newsletter.

It's a Growth Letter with real stories, lessons, and learnings about marketing, strategy, growth, and mindset.

It's brought to you by a caring human (this ragazza!) and no AI was used to create this content.

❤️ I NEED AN ANNA. YOU NEED AN ANNA. WE ALL NEED AN ANNA.

There are a lot of cool things about starting your business: freedom, owning your time, scaling potential, doing what you love… etc, etc.

But there are also a lot of uncool things.

The reality is that sometimes it's really hard.

And some days are really ugly.

The last time I had an ugly day, my head was spinning out of control with negativity.

I was questioning my decisions and started wondering what the point was.

I was super confused and felt hopeless (it didn’t help that I didn’t sleep well and had a massive headache).

Then my friend Anna called me.

She could sense from a voice message I sent her that my voice was off.

She listened to me crying and paid attention to each word.

When I finished, she made this comment:

"Do you know what your real problem is? You have options. You have plenty of options."

This was an immediate reset of my brain.

It gave me perspective.

How could I feel hopeless when I have so many options?

I picked myself up, looked at my options, looked at my strategy, reminded myself of my "why," and decided what to focus on next.

My point?

It's important for your growth to have an Anna.

Someone who doesn't just give you a pat on the back and feel sorry for you.

A friend who always encourages your growth and offers you perspective.

A friend who helps you redirect your unhelpful thoughts into something that's actually helpful.

A friend who is real and honest, with no sugar-coating.

Note: This friend also happens to be the most incredible performance and career coach. You can find more about her HERE.

☑️ ANNUAL FRIEND REVIEW

The previous section brings me to an interesting concept I read about in "We Should All Be Millionaires" by Rachel Rodgers (by the way - this book is literally GOLD!).

The Annual Friend Review!

What is it? I'm glad you asked!

You know how at work your boss does your annual performance review?

This concept is basically about doing the same with the people you surround yourself with.

Are the people in your life supporting your growth, encouraging you, cheering for you, and even mentoring and coaching you if they have that capability?

Or are they putting you down and clipping your wings?

This is not suggesting that you should cut your friends from your life or not help a friend in need. NOT AT ALL (it's really easy to mistake the two!).

But it's a suggestion to review and assess how much time and effort you want to invest in a relationship that's constantly taking your time and draining your energy.

Time and energy that you could be using to grow yourself and your business.

I found this concept brilliant and powerful.

💡 ARE YOU IN YOUR ZONE OF GENIUS?

I recently read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks (yes, I’m reading a LOT these days!).

In his book, he lays out the different “zones” we can be in.

He explains these four concepts:

  1. The Zone of Incompetence: These are the things that are totally outside your competence. You always need to hire or delegate because you have no clue how to do it. For me, for example, it would be fixing my car. I wouldn’t even try, even if I wanted to.

  2. The Zone of Competence: This is when you can do things, but you’re not great at them. It’s easy to recognise and you know you can easily delegate. An example for me would be sewing. I can do it, but I’m slow and not great at it.

  3. The Zone of Excellence: This is when it can get a bit tricky as it can be confused with the Zone of Genius very easily. This is the zone where you’re REALLY good at doing something, better than most people you know. It’s really easy to stay “stuck” in this zone.

People praise you for the work you do here. You earn good money. You feel this is your zone. And you’re comfortable in this zone! It’s hard to leave when you’re all cozy, right? But you don’t feel fulfilled.

  4. The Zone of Genius: When you’re in this zone, time doesn’t pass. It flows. It’s so easy to create. It feels like second nature to you. You know that feeling when you love what you’re doing so much you even forget about the time? Gay’s Hendricks suggests that you need to make a conscious effort to take the big leap, remove what’s limiting you (he calls it the Upper Limiting Problem), and move to your Zone of Genius because this is where you’ll find true success and happiness.

My Zone of Genius? Leadership and strategy.

Do you know what’s yours? Hit reply and let me know yours :)

😬 FEELING STUCK? THESE COULD BE THE REASONS.

Reason 1: You don’t have a strategy

You don’t have a marketing strategy so you’ve been doing “spaghetti marketing”.

Meaning you just keep trying things here and there, with no strategy or consistency, and hoping (praying?) it “sticks”.

Reason 2: You’re lacking accountability

You have a strategy.

You even have a why.

You started to implement your vision.

But then…

You get too much in your head.

You overthink.

You have too many ideas (and you get stuck again).

You worry this won’t work.

You have to do uncomfortable things - and you’re so good at coming up with the best excuses not to do it.

Did you ever calculate how much this is costing you
? What’s your hourly rate? How much time have you “wasted” on spaghetti marketing OR not making progress?

How far along could you be now if you had a clear strategy and if you were taking action?

You’re robbing others of your talent.

You’re robbing yourself of the life you want.

ONE ACTIONABLE GROWTH TIP:

Find ways to stay accountable. Some ideas:
☑️ If you have an audience (even if tiny), make a promise to your audience. It will “force” you to deliver even if it’s just to help you “save face”.
☑️ Find an accountability partner. But not partner. One that kicks your ass and takes no excuses. If your accountability sessions become all about lame excuses and pity - you won’t make progress.

Psssstt - here’s a secret:
