Growth Letter #2
Woohooo we’re in 2023!!! Happy New Year.
And because it’s the start of a new year, this Growth Letter is highly focused on GOALS (so expect a slightly different format).
Although I believe goals can (and should) be set any time of the year, there’s great power in looking at the new year as a new opportunity and a blank canvas to make the changes you need to be a happier, healthier, and wealthier human!
In fact, a recent American study has shown that 46% of people who set goals and new habits as New Year's Resolutions were more successful in achieving them 6 months after - compared to only 4% who made similar goals in other periods of the year.
Did you set your SMART goals yet?
Note: I linked above the podcast that shared this stat and I fully recommend this episode by Steven Bartlett. It’s all about facts and studies about goals and habits.
First a bit about me…
Hi, I’m Ro 👋
Over the past decade, I’ve been heading marketing departments, creating & executing ambitious strategies, while also leading, growing and mentoring marketing teams.
I recently started my consultancy business and I want to take you on my journey where I openly and honestly share my ups and downs, failures and successes.
I’m all about marketing, business & personal growth.
Growth is my thing - and if it’s your thing too, I’m sure you’ll enjoy these letters.
👩💼 1. MY SECOND MONTH IN BUSINESS
I didn’t take it easy in November - I jumped straight into my consultancy business after finishing my 9 to 5 job.
So I decided to take it easier in December.
Between client work, birthday parties (75% of my household was born in December!), pizza nights, Christmas shopping, hosting Christmas, a trip to Porto for New Year’s and 2 weeks with sick kids - I decided it was a good month slow down on my ambitious goals.
I’m happy I did, but I couldn’t help to feel guilt. Slowing down can be a bit of a challenge for me at times. I’ll be working to find my balance in 2023: between working hard and resting harder.
Thanks for the reminder Sahil!
So here’s the round up for December goals, my goals for January and for the year.
I’m not ready to talk about the x’s just now, but I will at some point. Talking about money with others still stresses me out, but I’m working hard on this!
👀 2. THE VISION
As I mentioned in my previous letter, I think the key to successfully achieving goals is to be clear on your vision.
My new vision: retire by the time I’m 50.
I want to help thousands of entrepreneur women to kick ass with their online businesses (I strongly believe that the world needs more female leaders with their hearts in the right place).
And I want to make enough wealth in the next 8 years that I don’t need to worry much about money after I turn 50.
So this is the vision I’m working towards.
And this is not a sprint. It’s not a marathon. It’s a journey. It will take time, patience, and sacrifice.
But it’s all super clear in my head. And I know from my past that when I’m this clear about a vision - I’ll figure out a way to make it happen.
These growth letters will be a very powerful way to keep me accountable.
(My secret hope is that they’ll inspire and motivate you!)
✍️ 3. MY WORD FOR 2023
FOCUS.
I thought long and hard about this. Many words came to my mind, but the one that make more sense was focus.
Why?
Because without being super focused on my vision, goals and daily habits, it will be easy to get distracted by the next shiny object.
What’s your word for 2023?
🧚 4. GROWTH INSPIRATION
It was my birthday in December. I turned 42. Here are 10 life lessons and 1 regret:
Lesson #1: My life partner was by far the most important decision I ever made. It will always come with a lot of challenges and ups and downs - but this is the person you’ll spend most of your grown-up life with, so being with someone who shares my values and goals, supports my decisions, encourages me when I’m down - it’s not just important, it’s EVERYTHING!
Lesson #2: Your network is your net worth is absolutely right. Who you surround yourself with is who you become and so many incredible opportunities can come from your own network. My first client was someone in my network and my second client was recommended by someone in my network. And now one client is recommending me to a friend. Basically, my business was born from my own network.
Lesson #3: Gratitude is the most powerful daily habit I have. When my days suck, being grateful reminds me of everything I have already and that all is actually pretty much ok. When I rock, being grateful keeps me humble.
Lesson #4: You don’t need a fancy degree to be good at what you do. You need experience. You need to obsess, learn, test, fail, obsess more, learn more, test more, and fail more.
Lesson #5: It’s ok to fail. Not every idea or experiment will work. And that’s ok. Learn and move on.
Lesson #6: Remove the stress from difficult decisions, by managing the risk. Every time I made crazy moves in my life I was always financially prepared for the worst-case scenario. Also - I asked myself: what’s the worst that can happen? The answer to that question always puts me at ease.
Lesson #7: The only way to achieve your goals is to have a very clear vision.
Lesson #8: Being a good leader is not that hard - support your team, be clear on what you need to achieve, listen, and really care about their success before your own. It’s actually a simple formula that will make people respect you and always go the extra mile for you.
Lesson #9: Going the extra mile will always put you at the top. For the love of all things awesome: never be an “I don’t care or it’s not my job person”. Believe it or not, your attitude is more important than your experience - you can learn anything, but it’s really hard to teach attitude. Caring, making it your job, and putting in the work will always make you stand out and make people you work with love you.
Lesson #10: Always do you first. This was probably the hardest for me. In one of my previous jobs, my colleague once told me “You can’t ask for raises for your team if you don’t sort your own raise first - always do you first”. She was right. If you don’t do yourself first, how can you properly look after anyone else? Goes for money and health (physical and mental).
My #1 regret: that I didn’t start investing my money when I was younger. No one ever taught me about investments and how to make my money work. So I’m working hard now to learn as much as I can. It’s my new obsession. This was one of the non-negotiable things I wanted to achieve in 2022: getting started with investments! In 2023 I’ll keep obsessing about this and learn everything there is to learn about investments. I can’t go back in time - but I can do better moving forward.
🚀 6. WHAT I’M TAKING WITH ME IN 2023
Abundance mindset and full control over my finances
Mastering investments
Good habits (and good habit tracking)
Consistency with my own content creation and distribution
Embracing failure - it’s sooo important to be ok with failing fast, learn and adjust
Taking action
